In September of 2020 we bought a 1995 Excella 25′. After years of camping in our 17′ Bambi, we knew that a time would come when we wanted something bigger … with an air conditioner … and a grey tank! That time arrived when we moved house. We had a little money leftover from the sale and decided to look for a bigger camper. Don’t worry, we still have the Bambi and have no plans to sell it.
I used airforums.com and Airstream marketplace on Facebook find opportunities. My first find was a 1970’s model in North Jersey. The price was good, the body was in good shape, but I found rear end separation, burst pipes, and other issues. I was lucky to get out of that sale. My second find was a 1980’s model in Tennessee. I had a good friend who lived nearby look at the camper for me. After expressing my interest, the owner informed me that there was a problem with the title that he was trying to fix. I was not in a hurry so I told him I could wait. He then brought the camper to North Carolina and I arranged to meet him. After inspecting the camper I asked if we were still agreed on the price and if he wanted me to make a reasonable deposit to hold it while he worked on the title. He told me that he had someone else coming to look at it and that I would need to purchase the trailer as-is. I drove away!
As our search continued we decided that having a grey tank was important to us and I decided that while I wasn’t not afraid to work on the camper, I did not want to do any major renovations. Finally I found the 1995 Excella in Waynesboro VA. The camper was in very good shape, the seller was agreeable, and so I towed it home. Say hello to “Big Boy.
